Known as much for our warm, personable service as for our delicious food, Chick-fil-A has come a long way since our humble beginnings, when S. Truett Cathy opened the first Chick-fil-A restaurant in Atlanta's Greenbriar Mall in 1967. Today, our family-owned business has the highest same-store sales and is the largest quick-service chicken restaurant chain in the United States based on annual sales.
A lot has changed over the years, from delicious new menu items to our popular app that makes ordering quick and easy. But we’ve never changed our commitment to warm, friendly service — or the recipe for our Chick-fil-AⓇ Chicken Sandwich, which Truett perfected at the Dwarf Grill, a restaurant he opened with his brother, Dan, in 1946.
That’s helped put Chick-fil-A on a strong growth trajectory over the years. From New York City to Hawaii and Puerto Rico, we have locations in 48 states and counting. We're joining new communities nearly every week and expanding internationally.
Chick-fil-A is committed to bringing economic opportunity to local communities through our local Owner-Operator model. Each Chick-fil-A restaurant brings new career opportunities, employing approximately 80-120 Team Members.
The vast majority of local Owner-Operators own only one restaurant, meaning they are small business owners who are on site devoting personal attention to mentoring Team Members, helping them develop business skills and strengthen their leadership capabilities. Over the past two years, 76 percent of newly selected Owner-Operators had experience working as Team Member themselves.
Not having had the opportunity to attend college himself, Truett established a college scholarship program in 1973 for restaurant Team Members. Over time, that program evolved to place greater emphasis on an employee’s community service and leadership abilities.
Community engagement remains core to our restaurants. When we choose local franchise Owner-Operators, one of the key factors is how that person will stay active in their local community. Through our True Inspiration Awards® grant program, Operators nominate local nonprofits to receive funding, and restaurants donate unused food to local food kitchens through our Chick-fil-A Shared Table® program.
We believe that a strong and caring culture is essential to our success. The notion of care applies not only to franchise Operators, Team Members and customers in Chick-fil-A restaurants, but also to how we treat each other at the offices of our Support Center in Atlanta.
Chick-fil-A is committed to a workplace culture where everyone is treated with honor, dignity and respect. "We are better together" — one of our core values — means that when we combine our unique backgrounds and experiences with a culture of belonging, we can strengthen the quality of care we deliver.
Truett always maintained that he was in the people business, prioritizing customer service and dedication to his community. When traveling one day, he thanked the employee of a high-end hotel and the man responded, “my pleasure.” Struck by that response, Truett encouraged his employees to add that phrase to their daily lexicon, something they do to this day.
Chick-fil-A is still a family business, with Truett’s grandson Andrew serving as the CEO. The Cathy family has been working together for 70 years. Today, several second and third generation Cathy family members are carrying on the company tradition.
Chick-fil-A was the first restaurant to pair shopping and eating by opening in an Atlanta-area mall. We continue to look for new ways to meet our customers where they are, with digital enhancements and bold new restaurant designs. As the first quick-service restaurant to introduce parent-friendly menus, with fruit cups and a grilled entree, we believe we can always find a better way to care for our customers.
